Meet the Coach – Gina Furrey Buhse
Coach Gina Furrey Buhse brings a unique blend of elite playing experience, advanced education, and athlete-centered coaching to every pitcher she works with. With over 17 years of playing experience and coaching since 2009, she has dedicated her life to developing not only high-level pitchers, but confident, resilient young women through the game of softball. She currently serves as the Head Softball Coach at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College, where she leads and mentors student-athletes both on the field and in the classroom. Her coaching philosophy is rooted in safety, individuality, and confidence, with a strong belief that athletes perform best when instruction is tailored to how their bodies move and how their minds learn. Coach Gina is a graduate of West Vigo High School in West Terre Haute, Indiana, where she established herself as one of the most dominant pitchers in program history. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Middle Tennessee State University, with minors in Nutrition and Health & Human Performance, and completed one year of graduate work in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Grand Canyon University. She is currently pursuing an associate’s degree in Myoskeletal Massage Therapy and a bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College, allowing her to integrate biomechanics, recovery, and mental performance into her coaching. She holds an Elite Pitching Coach Certification through Pauly Girl Fastpitch under professional pitching coach Rick Pauly, is a Motor Preferences Certified Expert, and is McLoughlin Scar Tissue Release trained. These certifications allow her to provide individualized, research-backed instruction focused on both performance and long-term athlete health. As an athlete, Coach Gina was a four-year varsity letter winner, four-time All-Conference selection, four-time lowest ERA, three-time highest batting average, and a former national pitcher for the Orlando Vice. She also holds multiple school records, including most strikeouts in a season (219), most strikeouts in a career, most shutouts, lowest ERA, most strikeouts in a game (17), and most home runs in both a season and career. What truly sets Coach Gina apart is her ability to connect with athletes. She understands the physical demands of pitching, the mental pressure of competition, and the importance of confidence. Her goal is not just to develop great pitchers, but to build leaders who trust themselves, compete with purpose, and carry those lessons far beyond the field. |
